Modern v. Slim Fit: What’s the Difference?

While the actual measurement differences between the two styles isn’t all that different, there is a contrast in how the two sizes look. Which one you opt for will truly depend on your comfort level in each fit and which one you think you look best wearing.

Modern-Fit Suit Sizing

A Modern Fit suit falls between a classic and slim fit. While it’s not cut as close to the body, it’s a tighter fit than a classic-style suit. This modern fit still looks great in a variety of shapes and sizes.

A Modern Fit jacket fits slightly trim through the shoulder and has a closer fit to the chest but is cut a little looser to allow more room between the body and the jacket—allowing room for comfort and movement.

The Modern Fit pants have a slimmer fit in the seat and thigh area, but still are a little wider near the ankle, which allows for a break in the pants.

Slim-Fit Suit Sizing

Slim fit pants are slimmer all the way down the leg, creating a tapered look. The opening around the ankle is smaller, which allows for a shorter hem to show off a pair of statement socks.

As for the Slim Fit jacket, the look fits closer to the body with a cut narrower through the waist and hips, showing a trimmer waist. The sleeve opening around the wrist is also narrower than the modern one, which creates a tapered sleeve all the way down from the shoulder to the wrist.
