A pocket square is very similar to a handkerchief. While the terms are often used interchangeably, the most notable differences are that handkerchiefs tend to be bigger than pocket squares and used in place of a tissue to blow one’s nose. A pocket square is a square piece of fabric that is folded and put into the left breast pocket of a suit or tuxedo jacket.

The biggest rule when it comes to pocket square is to not match it exactly to the color of your tie. Although, this rule gets broken often, so we won’t sat anything if you do pick matching colors. White is the most popular and classic color, but you are free to show your style here, with any number of accent colors. A pocket square can also be a pattern, as long as your shirt or tie is not heavily patterned. The most popular fabrics for a pocket square is silk, satin twill, and cotton.

Keep in mind, too, that a pocket square can take the place of a tie. It adds just a little extra polish to your suit, if you happen to be in no mood for neck restriction.

There are tons of pocket square folds out there, but the most popular are a straight fold; folds with one, two, three or four points; a puff fold; or a flower fold.
