How to Throw a Game of Thrones Themed Wedding

How to Throw a Game of Thrones Themed Wedding

Not only is Game of Thrones super cool, it’s also a perfect theme to go with for a winter wedding—or a winter wonderland destination wedding. Iceland, anyone? While it’s April and not winter in the majority of the US, with the final season airing this month (we’re not ready either), we decided to share some amazing ways to add in a little Game of Thrones flair to your wedding.

Phrases

With any show/movie/book, there are dozens of taglines and phrases that can be used to your advantage. Think invitations or custom napkins or fancy signs. We suggest rewatching or rereading for some inspiration. Here’s a few ideas:

  • Your Wedding Is Coming
  • He Bent the Knee
  • Moon of My Life/My Sun and Stars

Hair

Grooms, have you been dreaming of going full beard and wild mess of hair at your wedding? Well, this is your perfect excuse. Nearly every swoon-worthy character in Game of Thrones has perfectly untamed hair, reminiscent of the medieval world they inhabit.

And ladies, grow out your white locks (or any color, really) and plan for some gorgeous waves and braids just like the queen you are.

Fur

It is winter, after all. Keep in mind that fur does not have to be tacky (or real). You don’t have to look like a Wildling, covered head to toe in the stuff. Fur shawls or coats are both warm and regal. And if you’re not planning on wearing it, there are plenty of other ways to decorate with it. Do I hear (faux) bearskin rug?

Decorations

The decoration possibilities are endless. There’s so much you can do with both merchandise from the show (banners, for example) and other things that aren’t show specific. I’m personally envisioning lots of greenery, ornate place settings and goblets, and jewel tones everywhere. And you can’t have a Game of Thrones wedding post without mentioning swords.

Cake

There are so many options here for absolutely stunning wedding cakes. If you’re worried about going too overboard, subtle details are still pretty cool. One tier with scalloped dragon scales pays homage to those incredible beasts, while still being elegant.

Wearable Details

I’m thinking dragon jewelry, with inspiration drawn from the amazing pieces we see Daenerys often wear, but there’s so many other options, and not just for the ladies. Why not try a Hand of the King pin in lieu of a boutonniere for your best man. And don’t even get me started on crowns.

Signature Cocktails

You, of course, can stick to the Dornish red, ale, and rum that the Westerosi always seem to be drinking, but why not have a little fun with it? Mix some loaded cocktails of every color and the possibilities are endless. Name them for houses, or places, or people. Literally anything. Here’s a list of ideas to get you started:

  • The Bastard of Winterfell
  • The Night King
  • The Red Keep
  • Kingslayer
  • Milk of the Poppy
  • Wildfire

Vows

Several weddings take place throughout Game of Thrones, some pleasant, others not, but the ceremony is sweet, no matter who is participating. The hands of the couple is bound with ribbon, much like the real-world tradition of “tying the knot,” and they recite their vows. The best part of the vows, in my opinion, is when simultaneously the bride and groom say, “I am hers/his and she/he is mine. From this day to the end of my days.” Literal chills.

And if these photos and ideas aren’t enough, here are a few more stunning Game of Thrones styled shoots for your viewing pleasure. I couldn’t not share.
