It goes without saying that you want to look and feel your absolute best on your wedding day. Like any other wedding-related item, figure out your budget before you start shopping. Be sure to include the rental of the tux itself, as well as any accessories. Kylie Carlson of The Wedding Academy recommends also taking your groomsmen’s budgets into consideration. While you might be fine splurging for your big day, you don’t want to pick something for them that comes with a big price tag.

Never assume that you’ll be able to rent a tux at any given time, says Kevin Dennis, of Fantasy Sound Event Services. If you wait too long, you may be stuck with something you don’t really like because that’s all that was left.

Seeing colors online won’t be the same as holding a swatch in your hand, says Waters.

Don’t Forget About Fabric

“You may love that velvet jacket, but it won’t pair well with a summer outdoor wedding celebration,” says Carlson. “Comfort needs to play a role alongside style.”

Do Include the Bride

Even if your fiancé has handed off the responsibility entirely to you, you should still sit down and discuss preferred wedding day styles, so your outfits complement one another, says Wates.

Dennis explains that this is typically how you’ll be photographed during the formal portraits, so you want to make sure it doesn’t look too boxy.

Don’t Shy Away from Color

Just remember that a little can go a long way. “You can still stick to black or other neutrals while also making a splash with your tie or handkerchief,” says Dennis.

Do Try it on Well Before the Big Day

Once you’ve selected your tux, make sure you try it on again before you take it home (or before your wedding day) so that you’re sure it fits and has all the pieces, says Chang. If something doesn’t fit or work, you have the time to get a replacement.
